Poem: An Untimely Invitation

poem

An Untimely Invitation

by Shahinur Islam

As many times the waves have lapped

over the two banks of the river

as many times the two banks have unified

to steer the boat to the quay of your love

as you have stayed at the distant bank

and now when there is no high tide

no upstream flow for navigation

is it the time for you

to say— I love you— in such a way

to cross the dead river

to beseech in such a loving way

to walk hand in hand

we can’t revive the lost love

in our eyes

though you and I long to

now time doesn’t any more

time chains love over again

with which none has to do anything

I just go on my way and you on yours

many loves end in such a stab of pity

on the ramshackle fiddle

the tune of pain plays

that time wailings alone overflow

this and that bank of the dead river
